Don Orr Ski N’ Beach Haus

Did you know you can find loads of summer fun at Don Orr Sk N’ Beach Haus in TC? It has way more than just snow skis…

Those of us who spend our winters in Northern Michigan know Don Orr as a great place to purchase ski apparel and equipment, but it is way more than just a winter destination…During summer months Don Orr turns into a tiki bar boutique filled with beach gear, apparel, swimsuits floats, sandals, sunglasses, and so much more! The locally owned store has a good selection of life jackets and sunglasses (see pictures below) and sell my favorite brand of sunscreen: Sun Bum! They have a great selection of local apparel brands including M-22, Love, My Michigan Roots and 45th Parallel. Visiting from out of town? You can rent a huge yellow lily pad for hours of fun to play on the water! Take it to a beach or show it on the back of a boat for floating fun in the middle of the lake. Head to their website and sign up for their emails for 10% off a shopping trip www.donorrskihaus.com Or visit in person —> Don Orr Ski N’ Beach Haus:  890 Munson Ave, Traverse City, MI 49686 (see map below)

Mission Point Lighthouse on Old Mission Peninsula, Michigan

Visit the Mission Point Lighthouse on Old Mission Peninsula and you will be standing on the 45th Parallel, which is halfway between the North Pole & the Equator. The adorable white lighthouse is tourable, however, one doesn’t need to visit the self-guided historical museum to enjoy the park and magnificent natural views of Lake Michigan.  Visitors can walk the park trails or walk along the beach, however, as of April 2020 the high waters have taken away much of the sandy beach area (see images below for April 2020 beach pictures). When you are there, take a peek into the historic Hessler Log Cabin- see picture below. Take a picnic, bird watch, or simply relax in nature. This is also a great spot to watch the sunset!

The scenic drive out Old Mission Peninsula gives a sense of the mix of agriculture, beauty, and homes that make up our region- On a beautiful day, jump in the car, drive past Cherry Orchards, stop by a few wineries and head out Center Road (M-37)… At the North tip of the peninsula, about 17 miles out, you will find iconic The Mission Point Lighthouse and park. The lighthouse itself has been a symbol of Old Mission and Traverse City for decades- established in 1870.

Directions: Drive North on Center Road (M-37) up the Old Mission Peninsula about 17 miles- hit the end of the road to find a parking lot for the Mission Point Lighthouse and park. Click here for a map of the bike route up to Mission Point Lighthouse from Traverse City. See map below…
