The Grand Traverse Lighthouse

Located at the Northern tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, inside Leelanau State Park, 9 miles North of the town of Northport, is The Grand Traverse Light House. The lighthouse itself has been restored and is open to the public, and there is a cute little gift shop (open daily from May through October and weekends in November). In addition to the lighthouse, visitors can enjoy a beautiful hike, swimming, sunsets, fishing, and nature observation in the park.

Campsites that are directly on the waterfront are available for reservation, they are complete with their own fire pit for making s’ mores or cooking hot dogs! Comprised of 1,500 acres of breathtaking Lake Michigan shoreline and woods, Leelanau State Park offers 55 rustic campsites, three mini cabins, 8.5 miles of hiking/skiing trails, a playground for kids, public restrooms, and a picnic area. The highlight of visiting is the views of Lake Michigan, Cathead Bay, Grand Traverse Bay, and the Manitou Passage.

From the map it looks like there is a lot of sandy beach to the left of the lighthouse, however, recently the water levels are high and some of these shoreline trails are covered by the fresh waters of Lake Michigan.

Directions: The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is 35 miles north of Traverse City.  Take M-22 from Traverse City to Northport.  Then follow the “Lighthouse” signs through Northport on M-204 which flows into Lighthouse Pt. Rd.  Continue on Lighthouse Pt. Rd. following the “Leelanau State Park” signs to the very end. See map below…
